About us
Supporting People is a national government programme that funds housing related support services, to help vulnerable people live independently.
The Supporting People team manages the programme in the London Borough of Barnet and is responsible for:
- Paying other organisations to provide support
- Making sure that the support services are good quality
- Finding out what new services are needed.
In Barnet, the Supporting People Programme pays for 120 services from over 50 providers.
Supporting People programme offers two types of services:
- Accommodation based - where the support and the accommodation are provided together
- Non-accommodation based (floating support) - where the support is provided in your own home. When the support is no longer needed, it can ‘float’ off to be used by someone else.
What services does Supporting People not provide
Supporting People does not provide all the services that someone might need to live independently. The kind of services that supporting people cannot provide include:
- Domestic services - such as shopping, gardening or cleaning
- Personal care - such as washing and dressing
- Healthcare and medication
- Specialist counselling or treatment
- General housing services – such as repairs services
- Day services and centres – such as drop-in centres or community cafes
- Paying for residential care or nursing home
- Any services for children or young adults under 16 including childcare.
Our objectives
- A programme that delivers quality of life and promotes independence
- Services that are of a high quality, strategically planned, cost effective and complement existing care services
- The planning and development of services is needs-led
- A working partnership of local government, probation, health, voluntary sector organisations, housing associations, support agencies and service users.
