Housing related support
Housing related support aims to help people live independently in their homes, whether rented or privately owned.
The services are run by many different organisations like housing associations, charities or the council.
The services can be provided in your own home or in other places like:
- Sheltered housing
- Shared accommodation
- Temporary accommodation for homeless people
- Hostels and women's refuges.
There are mainly two types of support services available:
- Floating support – where the support is provided in your own home. When the support is no longer needed, it can ‘float’ off to be used by someone else.
- Accommodation based support – where the support and the accommodation are provided together.
The support is provided to you by a support worker, warden or estate manager, who may be able to help with:
- Finding somewhere to live and setting up home
- Maintaining the safety and security of your home
- Paying your bills and managing your money
- Managing your tenancy
- Filling in forms and other paper work
- Claiming benefits that you may be entitled to
- Developing life skills
- Gaining access to employment and training
- Accessing other services like health education or social services.
